More and more people would like to do the wetsuit business, but they don’t really know how to choose the wetsuit styles for their local market, this is not so good for achieving their business. Actually, the good business men always capture the basic style to custom their own wetsuit style.
Today there just show the basic and famous styles for your info in the article. If you would like to know more, welcome to Wetop Sports knowledge center.
the Wetsuit Style by Cut & Coverage
This is the primary way wetsuits are categorized.
A. FULL SUIT
This is the classic, all-over coverage wetsuit.
Description: Covers the entire body: arms, legs, and torso.
Best For: Cold to very cold water. This is the go-to for most surfers, divers, and triathletes in water temperatures below ~65°F (18°C).
Key Feature: Maximum warmth and protection from the sun and abrasions.
Variations: The thickness (e.g., 3/2mm, 4/3mm, 5/4/3mm) is chosen based on the specific water temperature.
B. SPRING SUIT (SHORTY)
The classic warm-water wetsuit.
Description: Features short arms and short legs, typically ending above the elbow and knee.
Best For: Warm water where you need some core warmth but full freedom for your limbs. Ideal for water temperatures between ~65-72°F (18-22°C).
Key Feature: Excellent mobility and flexibility, perfect for long sessions in milder conditions.
C. STEAMER / BACK ZIP
This is the traditional and most common style of full suit for decades.
Description: Features a single, long zipper that runs vertically up the back.
Pros: Generally easier to put on and take off because the back opens wide. Often more affordable.
Cons: The zipper can let in small flushes of cold water ("flush") and can create a pressure point on the back when paddling.
Best For: Recreational surfers, divers, and those on a budget.
D. CHEST ZIP / ZIP-FREE (THE MODERN HIGH-PERFORMANCE STANDARD)
This style has become the gold standard for performance in surfing and triathlon.
Description:
Chest Zip: The zipper is across the chest and shoulders, secured with a flap and a cord.
Zip-Free (or Zipless): Uses no zipper at all, relying on ultra-stretchy neoprene and a clever closure system over the chest.
Pros: Warmer (dramatically reduces water flush), more flexible, and contours to the body better, eliminating the back zipper pressure point.
Cons: Can be more difficult to get in and out of, and usually more expensive.
Best For: Serious surfers, triathletes, and anyone prioritizing maximum flexibility and warmth.
E. JACKET / SHORTY COMBO (TWO-PIECE)
A modular system for variable conditions.
Description: A separate long-sleeved wetsuit top (jacket) and spring suit bottom (shorts). They are worn together to create a full suit or separately.
Best For: Travel or areas where water temperature can vary. Gives you multiple options from one purchase.
Key Feature: Versatility.
F. WETSUIT VEST / TOP
For just a little extra core warmth.
Description: A sleeveless top, often with a front zipper, that provides core insulation without restricting the arms.
Best For: Wind protection and slight warmth in very warm water, or under a rash guard on a slightly cooler day.
G. WETSUIT SHORTS / PANTS (LONG JOHN)
Focus on leg warmth and protection.
Description:
Long John: A sleeveless, full-length bottom.
Wetsuit Pants/Shorts: Just the bottom half, with either long or short legs.
Best For: Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), or wearing under a drysuit. Sometimes used in surfing combinations.
The Wetsuit Style by Sport-Specific Design
The cut and paneling are often optimized for a specific activity.
A. SURF WETSUITS
Focus: Maximum flexibility in the shoulders and back for paddling. Warmth is secondary to mobility.
Key Features: Often made with the stretchiest neoprene (like Japanese Yamamoto limestone). Seam placement is designed to avoid chafing in the armpits and along the inner legs. The "Chest Zip" and "Zip-Free" styles dominate here.
B. DIVING WETSUITS
Focus: Maximum warmth and durability. Mobility is important but less critical than for surfing.
Key Features: Often made with a smoother, more durable outer skin. They can be thicker (7mm is common for cold water) and often feature a "Farmer John" style (a bib-style bottom with suspenders) with a separate jacket on top to create a double layer over the core. Back zips are still very common.
C. TRIATHLON WETSUITS
Focus: Hydrodynamics (speed) and buoyancy. They are designed to make you swim faster.
Key Features: Made of very smooth, slick neoprene to reduce drag. They have strategic panels of "buoyant" neoprene to lift your legs and hips for a better body position in the water. They are very flexible in the shoulders but often have a stiffer feel overall. They are always sleeved and almost exclusively use a "Chest Zip" for easy removal in transition.
D. FREEDIVING / SPEARFISHING WETSUITS
Focus: Extreme warmth and low volume (to reduce buoyancy at depth).
Key Features: Almost always made from open-cell neoprene, which has a soft, sticky interior that sits directly against the skin. This creates a perfect seal with no water flush, making it incredibly warm but also very difficult to put on (lube is required). They are usually two-piece (jacket and pants) and often have a camouflaged exterior.
How to Choose
WATER TEMPERATURE: (This is your first factor for thickness.)
Below 57°F (14°C): 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm Full Suit
57-65°F (14-18°C): 4/3mm Full Suit
65-72°F (18-22°C): 3/2mm Full Suit or Spring Suit
Above 72°F (22°C): Spring Suit, Vest, or just a Rashguard
YOUR ACTIVITY:
Surfing: Prioritize shoulder flexibility (Chest Zip / Zip-Free).
Triathlon: Prioritize speed and buoyancy (Sleeved, Chest Zip).
Diving: Prioritize warmth and durability (Back Zip or Two-Piece).
Freediving: Prioritize warmth and low buoyancy (Open-Cell, Two-Piece).
