Gear Maintenance: How to Care for Your Wetsuit?

Apr. 14, 2023

A wetsuit is an essential piece of gear for many water sports enthusiasts, such as surfers, divers, and triathletes. It provides warmth, buoyancy, and protection from the elements. However, a wetsuit is also a significant investment and proper care are crucial to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible. In this article, we will discuss some tips on how to care for your wetsuit.

Rinse with Fresh Water

After each use, rinse your wetsuit thoroughly with fresh water. Saltwater, sand, and other debris can damage the neoprene material over time. Rinse both the inside and outside of the wetsuit, paying special attention to the zippers and other areas where sand and dirt can accumulate.

Hang to Dry

After rinsing, hang your wetsuit to dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Avoid hanging it over sharp edges or creases, as this can cause permanent damage to the neoprene. It is also essential to avoid using a clothesline, as this can stretch out the wetsuit and cause it to lose its shape.

Store Properly

When not in use, store your wetsuit in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing it in a damp, humid environment, as this can cause mold and mildew to form. Ideally, store your wetsuit flat or rolled up, rather than hanging it on a hanger, as this can cause the neoprene to stretch out of shape.

Use a Wetsuit Hanger

If you must hang your wetsuit, use a wetsuit hanger designed specifically for this purpose. These hangers are made from non-corrosive materials, such as plastic or stainless steel, and have wide, padded shoulders to help distribute the weight of the wetsuit evenly. This can help prevent damage to the neoprene and ensure that your wetsuit maintains its shape.

Avoid Contact with Oil and Solvents

Avoid contact with oils and solvents, such as gasoline, as these can break down the neoprene material and cause it to deteriorate over time. If you do get oil or solvent on your wetsuit, rinse it off immediately with fresh water and a mild detergent.

Don't Use Hot Water or Bleach

Avoid using hot water or bleach to clean your wetsuit. Hot water can damage the neoprene and cause it to lose its elasticity, while bleach can discolor the fabric and weaken the seams. Instead, use a mild detergent and cool water to clean your wetsuit.

Avoid Excessive Stretching

Avoid excessive stretching of the neoprene material, as this can cause it to lose its elasticity and break down over time. When putting on or taking off your wetsuit, use gentle, even pressure, rather than pulling or tugging on the fabric. If your wetsuit feels too tight or restrictive, consider getting a larger size rather than stretching it out.

Patch Holes and Tears

If your wetsuit develops a hole or tear, it is essential to patch it as soon as possible to prevent further damage. Neoprene patches are available at most dive shops and can be applied using a special adhesive. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure that the patch adheres properly.
